The Sovereign of the seas
The "Sovereign of the seas" was built in 1637 by the famous shipbuilder
of that time, Phineas Pett. King Charles I wished a ship that should surpass any existing one. Thus a ship of imposing measurements, monstrous armament and unique ornamentation was constructed. The three gun decks were something new for the English shipbuilding as well as the four part masts with the addditional royal sail. The spritmast was also new, standing on the bow with the additional topsail. The construction of the ship was very expensive, but there were no heroic battles that would make herself felt. An upset candle produced a fire that distroyed the splendid ship of the English fleet.
